Medical Director

Patrick Carey, MD

I began my medical practice serving the Amish community around Holmes County, Ohio for four years as a physician member of the National Health Service Corps 1987-1991. I maintained a private practice of office and hospital Internal Medicine with a particular interest in Geriatrics for the next 15 years in Cleveland OH.

I became full time medical director for Open Arms Hospice and McCall Hospice House of Greenville in 2008.

Filling a need for expert physician care as part of a team effort to relieve physical, emotional, social and spiritual suffering in previously under-served terminal care patients motivated my choice of full time participation as a Hospice Medical Director. The opportunity this work has provided for personal spiritual growth was something that I had not fully anticipated. Intellectually, I continue to find satisfaction in lessening patients' and families’ distress through explanation of physical processes which occur toward the end of life and by judiciously using and simplifying the medicines required to treat their distress.
